The 2011 Stars & Stripes Classic
Joe Foss Institute

The second annual Stars & Stripes Classic benefitting the Joe Foss Institute was an overwhelming success, with attendees, donors and sponsors tallying up more than
$1.55 million in net commitments. Honorary Chairman T. Boone Pickens started the night off with a big bang by committing up to $1 million, as a dollar-for-dollar match of all money raised for the event. Held at the J. W. Marriott Camelback Inn, more than 850 attendees were treated to an emotional and heartfelt night highlighting honorees that have served their communities and nation, including actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise; NRA EVP and CEO Wayne LaPierre; NBA All-Star and Sacramento Mayor
Kevin Johnson; Former Washington DC Public School Chancellor and StudentsFirst Founder Michelle Rhee and Medal of Honor recipients Sammy Davis and Michael Thornton. Each honoree was interviewed by the evening’s host Emmy award winner and ESPN host Roy Firestone. The presenting sponsor was Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. and entertainment was provided by the Tenors. “The support from the community through this event was overwhelming,” said Lucian Spataro, CEO and
President of the Joe Foss Institute. “Our programs of working with teachers and students in the schools we serve across the country, teaching them about American history, civics and public service resonated with our guests, we look forward to expanding the reach of our programs in the year to come. With the focus of today’s education on math, science and a technology-based curriculum, America’s students have fallen behind in history and civics. Studies show students are woefully undereducated in history and civics. The Joe Foss Institute and our programs steps into that curriculum gap and works with schools, teachers and youth groups to educate our children about the history of our nation, America’s freedoms and their citizenship responsibilities.” By: Megan Rose
